UAPRN Atlanta, Join our TEAM!

We are super excited about our chapter supporting the "Walk-a-Mile" for Sickle Cell on September 14, 2019. We are still growing our team of 20 volunteers! Imagine the impact we could make as NPs and nurses by supporting funding for Sickle Cell Research.  Click on the registration link and join our team!

Oteia Morris FNP-C, Chapter VP

Oteia Morris, our Atlanta Chapter Vice President, has coordinated for our organization to participate in “Walk-A-Mile on the Westside Beltline” to support the Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. I was tasked with encouraging the chapter to participate, we need at least 20 volunteers.

I was also tasked with sharing a piece of my life, living with Sickle Cell Beta Thalassemia (SCBT). SCBT is a rare but mild form of Sickle Cell of which I experience occasional sickle crises (severe pain and swelling of joints) and have Lattice Degeneration, which are holes on the retina due to decreased blood supply from the sickling of cells in the small vessels that supply blood to the retina. This can later lead to retinal detachment and blindness, but because of the Sickle Cell disease, I am not a candidate for surgery.

However, I am truly blessed to have a mild form of Sickle Cell with rare health problems. Yet, there are individuals with Sickle Cell Anemia whom battle crises daily and whom lives are lived short due to an increased risk of infection and end-organ damage from infarctions. My very first patient in undergraduate nursing school was a young girl who passed away during my clinical when a vessel burst and she hemorrhaged. Yet, technology and healthcare is steadily evolving and there are so many new treatments and cures coming down the pipeline for Sickle Cell Disease.

Please help us support this walk to help raise funds for continued Sickle Cell research and awareness. Attached is the “Save-the-Date” flyer and additional information regarding the Sickle Cell disease. Registration is $10.

Thank you!
